How to Earn Real Miles Without Opening a Single New Card

Every points site eventually funnels you toward a card application. This page is the other path: the earning layers that require no credit pull, no annual fee, and mostly no ongoing effort. Individually small, together they quietly build a real balance.

Airline dining programs

AAdvantage Dining, MileagePlus Dining, SkyMiles Dining and their siblings (all run by Rewards Network) pay miles automatically when you eat at member restaurants with a linked card. Set it up once, earn forever. One program per card, tiers unlock quickly, and it stacks with other dining rewards, a stack we mapped in detail on our sister site: the dining stack.

Airline shopping portals

Every major airline runs a shopping portal paying miles per dollar for clicking through before you buy online. Rates run 1-5 miles per dollar normally and spike during promos and the holiday quarter. The discipline is a 10-second portal check before any online purchase, and comparing against cash-back portals for the same store, because sometimes cash wins.

Hotel promotions

The big hotel programs run registration-required promos more or less continuously: double points, bonus nights, accelerated status. They're free to join and stack with member rates. If you stay even a few nights a year, register for everything and let the bonuses land.

The marginal stuff, honestly rated

Survey sites, mile-earning games, and walking apps exist. Most pay pennies per hour of attention. We list them for completeness and mostly recommend skipping them: your time is worth more than a mile a minute.

Buying points, the one exception

Programs sell points at a discount several times a year. This is almost always a bad deal, except when it isn't: when the math on a specific, available, about-to-be-booked redemption beats the cash price. Price both sides, book immediately, never buy speculatively.
