Chase vs Amex vs Capital One vs Citi: The Points Ecosystems Explained
This page explains how the four major flexible-point ecosystems work so you understand what you're earning. It is not a card recommendation page. We're not linking specific card products; check current offers directly with each issuer, and see our offers board for what's actually worth transferring right now.
Chase Ultimate Rewards
Transfers to a strong mixed list of airline and hotel partners including United, Southwest, and both Hyatt and IHG on the hotel side. The most balanced of the four ecosystems, useful whether you lean toward flights or hotel stays, and the current live 100% IHG bonus on our offers board is a Chase-ecosystem move.
Amex Membership Rewards
The deepest airline partner list of any US program, including several international carriers with strong sweet spots (Virgin Atlantic, ANA among them). The strongest choice if your redemptions skew toward premium-cabin international flights rather than domestic hotel stays.
Capital One Miles
The newest serious entrant, with a growing transfer partner list and a simpler fixed redemption option (a flat cents-per-mile rate against any travel purchase) as a fallback if no partner transfer makes sense. Good for people who want flexibility without wanting to become a hobbyist.
Citi ThankYou Rewards
A smaller partner list than the other three, but includes Air France/KLM Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic, both frequent sources of outsized redemptions, plus a strong existing Flying Blue transfer bonus live right now (see our offers board).
Why we don't push cards here
Most points media makes the bulk of its revenue on card applications, and it shows in the advice: everything eventually points at a card. We'd rather you understand the ecosystems and make your own call on current offers, direct from the issuer, than read a "best card" ranking secretly sorted by affiliate payout.
